Goal: replace all the old lights with LED as cheaply as possible. The building's electric company is ACE Power (Alcorn County Electric Power Association). It is the local partner for TVA EnergyRight, which pays rebates on LED tubes and fixtures. Start with ACE's free lighting analysis.

Tips

  • Not used: USDA REAP grants exclude nonprofits, and the 179D tax deduction ended for projects starting after June 30, 2026.
  • Before calling anyone, count the fixtures: tube length (2′/4′/8′), T12 or T8, ballast label, sanctuary bulb types, and which rooms have dimmers. Take photos.
  • Cheapest mix: Type B (ballast-bypass) LED tubes, about $4–12 each, in fixtures that are still sound. Use LED panels or retrofit kits where old 1972 T12 fixtures have corroded sockets ($18–22 TVA rebate each). Have an electrician do or check the bypass wiring. Volunteers can relamp under supervision.
  • Type A plug-and-play tubes need no wiring, but they fail when the old ballast dies and often won't work on old T12 magnetic ballasts.
  • Sanctuary: LED high-bay or screw-in retrofits for the cans. Buy dimmable lamps if the room has dimmers.
